Walk downhill from Hammamhane through the winding streets of Çukurcuma toward Galata. The tower appears between buildings before you reach it — a medieval cylinder of stone that has been watching this part of the city since 1348. Go in the morning, before the crowds organise themselves.

Walk downhill to Tophane — ten minutes through Çukurcuma, past the antique dealers opening their shutters, past the sound of the neighbourhood beginning its day. Take the T1 tram from Tophane toward Sultanahmet. Alight at Gülhane or Sultanahmet, depending on where the morning takes you. Hagia Sophia will be there, as it has been for nearly fifteen hundred years, doing exactly what it has always done to people who stand in front of it for the first time.
